Beginning in January 2024

Unbound Writing is much more than a writing group.

In Unbound Writing we write in part as a means to escape the binds of our daily lives. We write as quickly and as poorly as possible with the pen ideally never or rarely leaving the page. What we leave behind is the inner critic and the ties that limit us- ones we might not even be aware of. What comes next is words- lots of words on the page-but what follows is release, connection, levity and often new understandings that stick with us long after class has ended.

"I believed I wanted to be a poet, but deep down, I just wanted to be a poem."

            -Jaime Gil de Biedma

HOW IT WORKS

We meet in a small circle (no more than 8 women), I read a poem, and then provide some simple jump off lines for us to write off of for a set period of time-typically 10-12 minutes. The goal is to to write saying “yes” to anything and everything that comes.

Then, we witness one another and read out loud what we wrote. We don’t comment or critique, we just share.  We repeat this process three times during the course of a class.

What happens through this cycle is truly transformative.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF YOU SEEK…

  • a deeper connection to yourself and others

  • a way to mine yourself for things you didn't even know you felt or thought

  • a space to express yourself free of judgment

  • an outlet without any pressure to produce, perfect, or perform

  • a regular writing practice

  • a new way to inspire ideas and writings that could lead to more formal projects

WANT IN?

Writing circles will resume in January.

  • “Britta is a gifted teacher, and leads a class full of warmth and openness. She is a natural, and makes everyone feel at ease -- which is so important for opening yourself up on the page. If you love to write, this is a class for you. It will remind you of why you love writing -- and it will take away the stress that can sometimes come from staring at a blank page. I even found myself feeling creative for hours after class ended. And if you're reluctant to write, this is also a class for you -- because the stakes are so low, and the benefits -- connection with others, and connection with self -- are so huge!”

  • Unbound Writing is such a freeing experience, where you can put whatever you want on the page. I was surprised by some of the places my brain went, and was also surprised at how lovely it all sounded when reading it aloud. Somehow everyone's pieces sounded like pure, beautiful, professional poetry. Perhaps it is better to not overthink everything all the time! I was a bit unsure of what to expect and how I would feel sharing such personal thoughts with strangers, but the space was very safe and inviting. I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to have this new experience and realize that maybe I can write after all!

  • Britta is an excellent facilitator. She provides a safe space for writing and sharing that fosters connection and enhances creativity. I highly recommend Unbound Writing to anyone who wants to express themselves through writing without feeling the pressure of a more typical class.
